Digital Camera USB Devices Driver

Helping people with computers.. one answer at a time.

Some USB devices simply require you simply plug it in to use them, but reviewing documentation that came with the device before you do is important.

I received a USB flash drive and would like to know how to install it. I have windows XP on an HP computer.

I've really come to love USB, USB devices, and USB drives. Why? Well, mostlybecause they just work. Especially with Windows XP.

  • Digital Camera Driver free download - Driver Easy, EOCP Driver for Sony Eyetoy USB Camera, Magic Camera, and many more programs.
  • Operating with WIN ME on Dimension L933r. Have been unable to install the USB driver for my digitial camera - SONY DSC-S75. Manufacturer's disk AND.

Installation instructions usually boil down to: 'plug it in'.

Really.

Let me explain why and what to do if that's not the case.

USB was designed from the beginning to be what's called 'hot swappable'.That means you can plug in and unplug USB devices without having to turn offyour computer. (Sometimes you will need to tell the computer you want to unplugit first, though. More on that ahead.)

Windows XP's 'Plug and Play' automatically detects the type of device that'sbeen attached and, if needed, automatically installs the appropriate driversfor it.

You can see where this is headed: Windows 'Plug and Play' plays very wellwith USB. Chances are installing your USB flash drive means simply plugging itin, and letting Windows do the rest. (It may ask you for your Windowsinstallation CD to get drivers.) When done, you should find another driveletter on your machine that is the USB drive.

Now to be clear, you should definitely review any documentation that camewith your USB device. While flash drives and other 'disk-like' devices tend tojust work, manufacturers of other devices often have you install their softwareon your system before plugging the device in for the first time. Sojust check the materials that came with your new peripheral.

Important: while USB devices are 'hot swappable' andplugging them in or removing them with the power on will not damage thehardware, it is possible, especially for disk drives, to corrupt the data onthe drive if you remove it at the wrong time. In the notification in yourtaskbar you should see an icon that when you hover the mouse over it, iscalled 'safely remove hardware'. Click on that, select the device you wish toremove, and Windows will do things like flush the disk buffers and ensure thatfrom the operating system's point of view it's safe to unplug it.

So, Leo, I have a 4 port switchview usb KVM switch. The KVM part is standard PS2/HD15. The USB part is connected to my printer (the idea being I should be able to use the printer from whichever system is selected on the KVM. Great idea when it works(and, I have to admit, it usually does!

The first PC on that switch is running XP PRO. Whenever I switch to any of the other PC's, XP PRO on system one starts beeping away. When I switch back to it, it normally (but not always) pops up with a USB error..

Any ideas on that (I've already tried to contact Avocent, standard disappointment there)?

Only because I don't have one for you, and with 100's of questions and comments every week, I focus on the ones I can actually help with :-).

In your case it *sounds* like the KVM switch is not handling the disconnected PC correctly, but you already know this. Giada driver download. In your shoes, with no support from the manufacturer, I'd return it and try a different brand.

I've bought my son a mp3 player, in the instuctions it says basically plug in the usb connecter and windows will install it all for you, I did this on my home pc a bubble came up saying new hardware found then followed by a hardware update wizard in a box, I followed the instuctions but it says cannot install hardware followed again by the bubble saying it didn't install and might not work properley.
I took the mp3 player to work and plugged it into the usb port and on this pc everything went fine, the bubble came up but no box and I didn't have to touch a thing.
I'm at a loss to why this happens, any ideas would be gratefully received. both os are xp home edition

I have a sandisk cruzer USB drive. It use to work fine. One fine day while I was transferring some data into the USB drive, came up an error message, something like all data has been lost. There after the drive is getting detected on any of the OS but drivers are missing windows is not installing the drivers for the device anymore, I have tried the drive on atleast 5 different computers and none of them install the drivers for the device. I did unplug the drive without using 'safely remove hardware' in the past, but not that day before it stopped working completely. I wonder is it possible to recover the drivers or if there is someway to install the driver?

Rozy: you didn't say what version of windows you have, or whether it's up to date with WIndows Update. I'd certainly recommend the later. Then, if it still doesn't auto recognize, I'd hit Control Panel, and run the Add New Hardware wizard.

Not all computers have flash readers. And the USB ports are in different locations depending on what specific computer you have. So without knowing more, it's hard to be more specific.

Hi Leo. Um I have all these USB devices - mp3, flashdrive and headset etc. and they used to work fine on my pc (WinXP) I would plug them in and they's work fine. Now, I plug them in, they'll register (i think) but the drive won't show in MY COMPUTER and the headset won't play sound. I had this problem ages ago, and someone said that it's a problem with newer windows and that I had to go and install some drivers from like WIN98. That worked, but I don't remember how to do it. Do you know what he was talking about and if so, how can I fix this problem? thanks Also, when I click on the safely remove hardware icon, the usb ports don't show anymore.

hi Leo! Please help me.. well, i formatted a friends' computer and install Win XP SP2. All the drivers had been installed except one 'USB device'. Wind XP looks for the drivers to install it but can't install in the end. When he got Win 98 it worked fine but now i couldn't rid this problem. I tried to looking for in all drivers cds that he had there, but they couldn't find the right driver. I'm so desesperated because i promised him to fix this problem and i couldn't solver it yet. Should i format it again and install??? Why windows couldn't find the driver}??? Mine's Win XP and it works fine, i never had this problem.

I've tried running XP on my current computer and had the same problem, it didnt seem to cause any problems with my usb ports but it bothered me that it kept showing up in my device manager. I eventually stopped using XP for the time being simply because of a shortage of disk space, but I'm also currious about what can be done to fix that problem. because I'm sure I'll once again try XP in the future and I'd like to have a reference to look at if/when this problem shows up again. thanks in advance to anybody that might know how to help with this problem.

Also to those who have asked where to plug (whatever device you're currently working with) in. with computers it tends to be if it fits that's where it goes, if it doesnt fit, dont put it there, lately (past 5-6ish years) they've started colour coding things like mouse/keyboard 'ports' as well as audio in/out. but it still stands if it fits you're good, if not check to see if it's upside down, or try another spot. sorry if I've gone into a bit of a ramble but I'm a little sleep deprived. and trying to make sure I make the point clearly.

Leo: I hope you dont mind me running around being like a 'vigilante' question answerer, I just noticed a large number questions that go unanswered because presumably you either dont have the time to go over it 'yet again' or you simply dont have an answer that you feel will solve the individuals problem. You have mentioned in a couple places that you recieve a large number of questions some of which you've already covered somwhere else, if you'd like me to I could help out with those, I'm not sure how many people there are working with you (or under 'your' alias) but I'm willing to lend a hand and I have enough know how to think I'm good at it.

1- does a external hard drive run as fast as a internal??
2- I have a pent 4 gateway does it have a usb
connection if I were to buy a external hard drive?
3- Is it difficult to install an internal hard drive?

Leo
July 4, 2005 1:08 PM

1: typically, no, but if you;re running USB 2, or Firewire, they can be pretty darned fast
2: no idea. it depends on the specific model of gateway
3: hard to answer, because it depends on your own comfort level. If unlabeled cables and wires and BIOS settings don't scare you, then it's not hard. Otherwise if none of that make sense, then I'd find a technician to do it for you. It's not hard for them :-).

Whats the risk of unplugging usb devices such as a digital camera and a flash memory drive without clicking on the 'safely remove hardware' option? I find it really annoying that as much as usb is practical it isnt 'recommended' to unplug it without doing anything just as you plugged it in.

So whats the risk? Is it that bad? Is there anything else i can do? should i really always click on 'safely remove hardware'?

Any comments would be really appreciated. thanks.

Leo
July 19, 2005 4:57 PM

You really should click on 'safely remove'.

The problem that avoids is buffering .. the operating system may, or may not, have finished writing to the device, when you decide to pull it out. Now, 99 times out of 100, it's probably just fine. But that one time could result in a corrupt memory card. You can reformat it, of course, buy you'll have lost the data thereon.

I bought a new Gateway Notebook about a month ago. None of the USB ports work, despite numerous patches and restores. I successfully synced twice, after that no device could be detected by any of the 4 USB ports. I can't figure out if it's a hardware problem or a software problem. Any ideas?

You didn't indicate whether you're getting any error messages.

I'd make sure that Windows was completely up to date, including SP2 (which included some USB fixes, I believe). I'd also check to see if your MP3 player came with a CD that perhaps needed to be installed first.

Here's my problem..

I have many USB devices and they all work but getting them to work is where i'm having trouble.

I have a Dell GX 280, Win XP SP1 fully updated (pre SP2 though).

If i plug in a USB device windows does not try and auto-detect/auto-install the hardware. If I go into my hardware manager and manually install the drivers it will work no problem. Now if i remove the USB device and plug it into a different port i have to go through this procedure again.

Like i said earlier, I have many USB devices so this is quite a pain when i have to switch them around. I havae no idea why I have to manually install these devices when they auto install on any other computer i've tried them in. I cannot find any information on the required service to enable/disable this feature, etc..

any help is appreciated. thanks.

I have a Belkin USB to DB9 cable that is detected by my Windows XP (Sony VAOI PCG-K35)computer. The device shows up under my device manager as 'Other Devices.' I think it should be under the USB COntroller Hardware. When I go under properties, I see the device type as 'unknown', the manufacturer as unknown, and the location is 'Location zero(Belkin components)' I also get the 'The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.' error. When I try to reinstall from the software, the wizard cannot find the necessary software.

Under my first USB root hub, the Unknown USB device is present, with a 100mA power requirement (well under the 500mA availability). What can I do to install a driver for the plug and play device that is undetectable on the web or on the computer?

Thanks
Mike

Leo
December 15, 2005 8:25 PM

Wibowo: it depends on the device. Win98's USB support is not as good as Windows XP, in general.

Leo
December 15, 2005 8:31 PM

Mike: it certainly sounds like you need to locate drivers and possibly install them manually. That's what I would expect for a USB to DB9 device. Check the belkin site, or any software that came with the device.

Hello!

I have a 1-GB Tiny Disk USB 2.0 flash drive and a 60-GB Hitachi Travelstar portable hard disk, both working fine in my laptop (WinXP Home SP2). I plugged them to another PC (WinXP Pro), which showed the message 'Found new device', then 'There was an error installing the device' and it did not recognise either and reported 'Device unknown' in the Device Manager.

The problem is that after that incident I get the same message when I plug any of these 2 devices to my own laptop as well, either directly to a USB 2.0 port, or through a self-powered USB hub. No matter what I tried (uninstalling - reinstalling, plugging in different USB ports, system restore..), both devices do not respond and I constantly get the message 'One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it'. Need to mention that the printer, which is connected to the USB hub, is working properly.

I would most certainly appreciate any kind of suggestion and help.

Best regards

I transferred files from my old computer to my new one using a usb memory stick (storage device). I think I made the mistake of not 'safely' removing it from my computer..now every time I start up, I get that little tray icon saying something about safely removing hardware, even tho there is no hardware to remove. Is there a way I can stop this from popping up every time I restart? (I don't get online much, so a personal reply would be great, if possible!)

Every time I try to install a new Maxtor IDE disk, I go through this, but I can't remember what I did.
This time, it's n a USB box. Though the Device Manager says 'This device is working properly,' My Computer doesn't see it. I have installed with the CD and without; I have uninstalled it; I have plugged it in and unplugged it, both with 'permission' and without, and I have tried to roll back the driver (though there is no old driver). As I say, the Device Manager sees the disk, and says it's working properly. Other disk drives (drives that already have info on them) work in the USB tray that I'm using. It's just that I can't use the new disk drive. Yes, it is jumpered correctly, too. The correct lights light, and the disk spins. This is the same problem I always have when I get a new disk. AAaakk!

Your comment {'Installation instructions usually boil down to: 'plug it in'.} is not always correct and almost inaccurate!
Let me explain: Certain hardware, require that the USB unit be not plugged-in or powered up, untill the drivers are manually installed via provided software (CD/DVD).
The simple and more accurate answer should have been 'RTFM'.
Certain USB hardware require that the installation software for the USB device be installed FIRST; prior to the connection/power up of the USB device.

Your method (as with other devices than just USB) will get drivers installed by WinOS but these MicroSoft provided drivers are usually a subset of the driver complement included with the device. Some vendors provide additional features that MicroSoft drivers will not (and cannot) include. Thus, the unknowing user will not be able to get the full benefit of the device as intended by the manufacturer.

Additionally, there used to be another problem with simply 'Plug it in' advice and this may still be correct today.
Once any USB device drivers are installed in a system, they are very difficult to uninstall, as all USB devices that have been plugged in (even if only once) are registered in the Window Registry permanently and are not normally removed with the idea that the user may plug them in again at a later date.
You can consider most USB drivers that are installed in a system as being 'sticky' and uninstalling them will require some hard Regisry editing.

Please retract your original suggestion!

For the past while some of my usb ports haven't been working... I can use my mouse and my printer, but if I use anything else, like an mp3 player or a digital camera they won't work, they appear in the taskbar and I can Safely Remove Hardware, and it acknowledges what the thing is (ipod, my camera type, etc) but if I click My Computer nothing shows up.

So I downloaded a usb analyzer, and it's basically being interrupted by something. Virus? Help please, thanks.

@ Yuneit:

Very often, devices that are more complex than a memory stick or mouse require an interface to be installed, such as iTunes for the iPod. They also may require additional drivers. Check the manual for how to install them :)

For Win98 you'll probably need drivers from the manufacturer. Windows
98 does not have USB flash drive support built in.

I bought a 128mb flash drive and connected it and Installation wizard came on and said installation was complete- but nothing shows up on my computer that I can find. I've tried unplugging the printer and restarting the computer to no avail. Trying deperately to save some family photos on a computer that has run out of memory. I thought it would show up and I could just drag things or tried doing a 'save as' and nothing seems to indicate a flash drive as a choice. HELP! I am sorry to be so stupid!

also with this article it is almost incorect because on some computer you may have to manually install the hardware with neither a CD/DVD but actually you will manually have to select the C:/WINDOWS.inf file.

Unfortunately that differs from machine to machine. Front,
back or side. Back is perhaps the most common.

Hi Leo,

Something strange just happened. I have a Kingston USB flash drive 1GB which I hae had for 6 months. I have used it to share files between my two home computers and my workstation in the office. This morning I transfered files to the stickand took it to work, then I did the same before I came back home. Only now when I plug the stick into my usb ports, I get a balloon from the taskbar saying 'USB device not recognised'. I thought something had gone wrong with the stick, so I tried it on my laptop and in seconds I could get to the files I saved at work. It works fine on one computer but not on the other - both are running Windows XP Pro SP2. I have performed no updates on the machine where it does not work. Any Ideas ???

I plugged in my new USB flash drive and it asked for an installation cd. It didn't come with one so I cancelled out of it. Now, when I plug it in, nothing happens; it doesn't seem to recognize it at all. Have I ruined it completely?

hello my son just got a new mp3 player for xmas and we have trieg everything but it keeps saying cannot find driver device. We have downloaded the newest win media player9 and still nothing it works cause we dragged a song in it and you can hear it play, but we dont know how to get it from the media player to the mp3 player please help.We are running win98se on mozilla firefox or internet explorer6 we have tried going through both browsers but it still says the samething cannot detect driver.

Unfortunately that's not a lot to go on. For what it's worth, this isn't about browsers or what version of Windows Media Player, this is likely about device drivers, which are low level pieces of software you never really 'see' but allow the computer to interface to different devices. In your case I would visit the support website of the manufacturer of whatever MP3 player you purchased and see if they provided updated device drivers for their device.

Salutations Leo
I'm having problems with my samsung s85 digital camera. I bought the camera from Target around a year ago and installed the driver on my computer and it worked perfectly. However, I lost it and, having given up hope of its return, uninstalled the driver and Samsung Master program. When I recently found it again, I attempted to redownload the driver from the samsung website, but now my computer doesn't even give the slightest notification when I plug it in the USB port. Is there anyway to fix this?

I just recieved a used usb with no instrucions. What do I need to do to 1. open the usb initinally.2View material on the usb. 3Transer new material to my usb.4 Delete unwanted material.

A USB what? I'll have to assume a USB disk of some sort. As the article says, plug it in. Open up Windows Explorer and you should see an additional drive letter - you can view its contents, copy files of or delete files just like any other disk.

Hello i got a webcam for my netbook but it says that i need to put in the installation disk to install it but on my netbook there is no disk drive so i cannot put in the installation disk is there anyway that i can install my webcam without using the installation disk? hope you get back to me please

You might see if the webcan manufacturer has the drivers available as a download. I actually also recommend getting a USN external CD or DVD drive for these kinds of cases - some will just need a disk.

@Cheska
Often a USB thumb drives simply wear out. First, I'd try another USB drive in my computer, or I'd plug the USB drive I was having trouble with into a friend's computer. If that other drive works in my computer or, if the USB stick in question doesn't work in my friend's computer, then I'd assume the stick was defective. Otherwise, I'd assume the problem would be with the computer, and that could have a number of causes.

Windows device driver information for Genius USB Digital Camera - Video

The Genius USB Digital Camera - Video falls under the category of digital cameras (more commonly called as digicams). These are types of hardware devices that provide the computer user with a way of taking either videos or still photographs of the intended subject. The digital image capture is made possible by the use of electronic imaging sensor systems which can accurately distinguish between the actual subject and the background. The USB interface port serves as the host for the Genius USB Digital Camera - Video when connected to the machine. Devices which are plugged into this port are normally automatically identified by the Operating System. These prompt the user to install the corresponding device driver to make its feature sets available for use. Audio streams for captured video require the presence of a competent sound card installed within the same machine.

Outdated Drivers?

Unless you update your drivers regularly you may face hardware performance issues.

To check your drivers you should manually verify every device on your system for driver updates

Being one of the more preferred image capture hardware in the computer industry, the Genius USB Digital Camera - Video is known for delivering high quality videos and images. The image files which are captured by the device normally make use of the JPG file format. The images can also be subjected to further processing via third party software applications. Captured videos on the other hand may be in the form of AVI or MPG file formats. These videos can be played back on installed multimedia applications using codecs which are supplied together with the installation of the device driver. The codecs provided by the device driver makes it possible for various software applications to correctly interpret the data captured by the device. Authoring and transferring to other media can also be done with the support of the appropriate device driver. It is highly recommended you run a free registry scan for Windows and Genius USB Digital Camera - Video errors before installing any driver updates.
