Oklahoma residents can now download a digital driver's license that can be used in place of their physical card in many circumstances.

Oklahoma Mobile ID can be found in the Apple App Store and Google Play. After registering and verifying the user's identity, the app will display a replica of their identification card or driver's license on their smartphone. The information comes directly from the Department of Public Safety.

The app doesn't officially replace the physical card in some cases, like when interacting with police. That would take legislation that's expected to be considered next year. Users can, however, use their mobile ID with retailers who accept it and even limit the amount of information it shows to only what's necessary to prove age and identity.

Oklahoma is the second state to adopt mobile ID and make it widely available, behind Louisiana.

'We are pleased Oklahoma is part of leading the movement to offer secure, official identification on a smart phone,' said David Ostrowe, secretary of digital transformation and administration. 'Oklahoma Mobile ID provides additional measures to reduce fraud and is a major step to bring technology innovation to Oklahoma citizens in a way that has real-world, immediate benefits.'

The app is free for the next year. At that time, the company that developed the app and provides Oklahoma's existing identity card infrastructure, IDEMIA Identity & Security, could negotiate with the state to charge a fee. However, Idemia instead may rely on revenue from commercial vendors who pay for the identity verification services it provides.
